1. How do I buy a SunStove®? How much do they cost?

The nonprofit SunStove Organization will ship two SunStove® solar cookers anywhere in the world from South Africa via parcel post. Current prices are US $40.00 or Rand 300.00 each. For shipping costs, email us at sunstove@iafrica.com.

2. How can I get larger quantities of SunStoves?

SunStoves are sold at cost in any quantity at our factory in South Africa (near Johannesburg). For export, 440 units fit into a 20 foot container.

3. How can I make a solar cooker?

Free plans are available for download here. You may also want to order a completed SunStove® to use as a model to manufacture your own solar stoves with local materials.

4. Do you ship SunStoves?

We ship up to two SunStoves at a time. If you wish to order larger quantities, you may arrange to pick them up at our factory.

5. When and where do SunStoves work best?

SunStove® solar cookers work best when and where the sun shines for more than 45 minutes every hour. They produce the most heat during mid-day. They work best when you can see your shadow, and it is no taller than you are (roughly between 10:00 and 15:00 in winter, and 9:00 and 16:00 in summer.)

6. How fast do solar cookers work?

The amount of time needed to cook depends on the volume of food and the amount of sunshine. Generally, food takes about twice as long to cook as “normal.”

7. How much food can be cooked at a time?

Each SunStove® can cook enough food for a familly of 4-6. Generally, one or two pots containing 4-5L of rice and 1-2L of vegetables/meat/fish.

8. What food can be cooked in a SunStove®?

Stews, soups, casseroles, meat, rice, fish, bread and vegetables. It can also be used for baking. The SunStove® can also be used for browning food such as meat and chicken. Put a little oil in the pot, add the meat and leave for about an hour, turning occasionally.

9. Are SunStoves safe?

Yes! There is no risk of fire or explosion, and a reduced risk of skin burns compared to cooking over a fire.

10. What are the environmental benefits?

SunStoves do not release pollutants or consume natural resources. They are powered by the sun – a free and abundant source of energy.

11. How can I contribute to SunStove Organization?

SunStove Organization is a non-profit organization that is self-sustaining. Your contributions help reduce the cost of solar stoves and make them available to more families. Click here to donate.

12. How should I care for my SunStove®?

USE ONLY BLACK POTS WITH BLACK LIDS. Pot lids get very hot, 150C. Do not allow the lid to touch the clear plastic cover; it will melt. Do not touch pot with bare hands; it will burn. Do not use pots with plastic handles; they can melt.

Do not leave your SunStove® facing the sun when not in use. Store it in the shade or turned away from the sun. Do not use ammonia based cleaners on the translucent lid and avoid scratching it.
